Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa’s response

JOHANNESBURG – 02 July 2010 – Soccer World Cup fever did little to affect new vehicle sales during June according to figures released by the National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of SA (Naamsa).

June new vehicle sales rose 763 units to 39,929 reflecting a 1,95% increase over May. The positive result is 20,7% ahead of the same month last year.

“June sales actually paint a very positive picture that belie the small effective increase,” says Vice President Marketing, Sales and Service Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa, Jacques Brent. “Soccer fever could have resulted in complacent buying patterns by consumers delaying purchase decisions, but the results show that sentiment in the new car market remains strong albeit that the last month of the quarter is generally a good month in the industry.”

Passenger car sales were responsible for the small increase in the overall market, accounting for 26,810 registrations during June, up 4.2% over last month and 25,8% ahead of June last year. Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) were down 2,6% on May to 11,222, but 9,5% up on June 2009.

Medium, Heavy and Extra Heavy Commercial Vehicles continued their good May performance during June, only Busses taking a 24.3% increase over the same time last year.

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) sales were directly in line with market performance overall. The company’s passenger car market strove forward, 18.1% ahead of last month, Fiesta enjoying a strong sales month with 690 finding new homes. The 275 Mazda3s sold during June spearheaded Mazda’s passenger car performance. Bantam remained FMCSA’s best-selling LCV.

“First half sales for 2010 remain positive 23,9% ahead of the same period last year, although this should be considered against very depressed sales conditions last year,” says Brent. “July sales will likely continue to be affected by the hype around the World Cup while consumers remain distracted by the soccer spectacle, but the outlook remains good for continued growth for the remainder of the year.”
